Our renal services

Led by Dr Kamal Ahmed, London Bridge Hospital’s Medical Director, our consultants and renal teams provide a comprehensive renal service for all kidney conditions from acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease at various stages and end stage kidney disease, to patients who require renal replacement therapy with dialysis.

We are very proud to state that our Critical Care and Renal services have been rated as “Outstanding” by our regulator the Care Quality Commission (CQC) at the last inspection.

London Bridge Hospital renal transplantation

London Bridge Hospital is one of only a handful of private hospitals to perform living donor renal transplants in the UK and is licensed as an organ transplant centre regulated by the Human Tissue Authority (HTA). The living donor renal transplant programme at London Bridge Hospital is built around three core strengths:

1. Multidisciplinary team

The collaborative nature of our multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) ensures that patients have access to the expertise of renal transplant surgeons, nephrologists, transplant nurses, pharmacists and consultants of other related specialities working as a team.

This consultant-led team is in place from initial evaluation through to transplant admission and post-transplant care. Our approach means decisions are based on the collective views of a number of specialists.

2. An established service

London Bridge Hospital benefits enormously from its close relationship with Guy’s and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, its renal transplant team, the tissue typing laboratory and the renal histopathology based there.

Furthermore, their transplant unit is one of the largest in the UK, performing around 250 transplants per year.

3. Critical care

The hospital offers first-class supportive services, including state-of the-art, level 2 and 3 intensive care facilities and the most up-to-date comprehensive imaging services supported by consultant radiologists with expertise in renal medicine.

Completing the transplant team are our two full-time donor and recipient transplant coordinators.

London Bridge Kidney Stone Service

London Bridge Hospital is one of a select number of private hospitals in the UK that can offer a holistic Kidney Stone Service. Including same-day appointments with a consultant who can diagnose and manage your condition on the day you arrive. We have state of the art diagnostics with a wide variety of tests and scans, and a uroradiologist who will be there to analyse and give you your results as soon as we have them.

There are a range of treatment options including lithotripsy, which is a non-surgical procedure often used as a first line treatment. Unlike surgical treatments for kidney stones lithotripsy does not require an incision to be made and patients can go home within a few hours of the procedure being conducted. The Kidney Stone Service also offers surgical options as well, so if lithotripsy is not suitable for you then our doctors may advise keyhole surgery.

London Bridge dialysis services

Dialysis and holiday dialysis are available at London Bridge Hospital. We provide the most efficient form of Dialysis called Online Haemodiafiltration (OHDF) to outpatients and inpatients. We provide dialysis from within our 4-bed Dialysis Unit and in other environments such as our high dependency and intensive care units.
The dialysis service had a specific menu designed to suit the needs of people who have kidney problems, particularly those on dialysis. This included foods low in potassium, phosphate and salt.
