Diabetic foot reconstruction

The medical world has made huge advances in the reconstruction of diabetic feet – thanks in large part to the work of Professor Venu Kavarthapu. Prof Kavarthapu leads a multidisciplinary team at London Bridge Hospital. Using the latest techniques to reconstruct diabetic feet the team can restore independent movement and prevent amputation for patients.

Professor Venu Kavarthapu is an internationally recognised specialist in surgical foot reconstruction. He’s served as president of the Indian Orthopaedic Society UK and is the current chairman of the British Indian Clinical & Academic Partnership. As well as heading our Diabetic Foot clinic at London Bridge Hospital, he teaches his speciality around the world.

Diagnostics: from routine to complex

Patients can usually have the full complement of diagnostic tests and imaging after their initial consultation, in the same location, on the same day – in London Bridge Hospital’s outpatients centre, HCA UK at The Shard. For complex cases experienced Consultant Radiologists, specialising in each musculoskeletal area of the body, will back up or challenge opinion.

London Bridge Orthopaedic consultants use the latest imaging and scanning techniques to ensure patients receive quick and accurate diagnosis. The results of investigations are usually reported on the same day.  If surgery is required, this takes place at the main London Bridge Hospital site on Tooley Street, a few minutes’ walk from HCA UK at The Shard, right next to one of the capital’s main transport hubs. This ensures easy access from the South East to leaders in their fields of orthopaedic surgery.

Specialist radiologists provide expert opinion

Orthopaedics is one of the areas that shows the value of our multidisciplinary approach which includes specialist consultant radiologists. For example, a patient with a suspected anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) problem could also have a ’ramp lesion,’ a tear at the back of the knee requiring a particular surgical approach. Less experienced surgeons and those who don’t work in close partnership with specialist radiologists sometimes don’t spot it – resulting in complications later on.
Although I’ve spent 16 years specialising in knees, it’s important for me to have a great consultant radiologist. In a complex knee practice like ours, their opinion can back up – or challenge – what we think is going on.

Physiotherapy at HCA UK at The Shard

Should patients  require physiotherapy as an outpatient or inpatient, there is continuity of care as London Bridge Orthopaedics consultants brief and guide their patients’ treatment. Physiotherapists can work with patients whilst in hospital, later building on their progress as an outpatient. Outpatients can take place in London Bridge Hospital’s state-of-the-art physiotherapy gym – also in The Shard. London Bridge Hospital physiotherapists specialise in post-operative care in each subspecialist area of orthopaedics.
