About London Digestion

Digestive complaints are common, with around 40% of the UK population experiencing at least one symptom at any given time. ‘London Digestion’ is a partnership of five eminent consultants specialising in diseases of the digestive system. They have a combined experience, spanning over 50 years, in the management of serious and complex gastro-intestinal and liver conditions as well as more common, everyday complaints. 


The team at London Bridge Hospital provides specialist diagnosis, medical treatment and surgery for a wide range of conditions. This group of dedicated consultants have received international recognition in the treatment and research of all aspects of digestion.

The latest techniques and technology for digestive diseases

Consultant surgeons and gastroenterologists use the latest endoscopic and surgical techniques to manage digestive disorders, including advanced endoscopic treatments, minimally invasive surgery and new technologies. These include the LINX® device (pictured) to prevent gastro-oesophageal reflux; the Barrx™ radiofrequency ablation (RFA) system, the most effective treatment to date for Barrett’s Oesophagus or abnormal cells; and BRAVO™ pH testing for early and efficient diagnosis, and thereby treatment, of oesophageal symptoms.

London Bridge Hospital is proud to host the ‘London Digestion’ team, all consultants from Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. This partnership specialises in the most complex areas of gastrointestinal medicine and surgery. They are recognised leaders in their field, published authors in medical journals and have written guidelines for other clinicians. The team is supported by consultant oncologists, radiologists, pathologists and clinical nurse specialists to provide a comprehensive range of diagnostic, treatment and therapeutic services for routine and serious cases.

Cancer of the oesophagus and stomach

The incidence of oesophageal cancer has been steadily rising over the last 10 years with the UK having the highest incidence in Europe. The rise in incidence of oesophageal adenocarcinoma, is thought to be related to gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and the formation of Barrett’s Oesophagus. Early identification of Barrett’s and regular monitoring are required to prevent oesophageal cancer.

When oesophageal or gastric cancer is identified, London Bridge Hospital provides a comprehensive diagnostic and treatment service. Patients are investigated quickly and discussed in a multidisciplinary meeting (MDT), which includes specialists from the team as well as pathologists, oncologists, radiologists and specialist nurses. The hospital provides all available state of the art treatments based in the new cancer centre at London Bridge.

Colon/bowel cancer

Colon cancer, or bowel/colorectal cancer, is one of the most common cancers in the UK. It is also often one of the most straightforward to treat, especially when caught early. We provide expert advice and a range of tests including colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy in the well-equipped London Bridge Hospital endoscopy unit.

Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis

Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are characterised by chronic inflammation of the intestine. Each is a form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and can cause diarrhoea, abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, fatigue and weight loss. We will discuss the best form of treatment for each condition, which may consist of either, or both medication and surgery.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome or “IBS” can cause bouts of abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhoea and constipation. It’s a common condition for which can offer various tests such as endoscopy to rule out conditions like Crohn’s disease before discussing and implementing a bespoke treatment plan for each patient.

Indigestion or acid reflux

Indigestion (dyspepsia) or heartburn, is one the most common digestive conditions, affecting most people at some point in their lifetime. Initial assessment should include an endoscopy to exclude any serious conditions. Usually, it can be managed with lifestyle changes and regular medication. In more serious cases, surgical correction is required to prevent reflux. Keyhole surgery is performed with either a fundoplication (stomach wrap) or LINX®   device insertion. Both procedures are very successful in preventing reflux.

Barrett’s oesophagus

This condition occurs when persistent acid reflux damages the normal lining of the oesophagus, and it is replaced by Barrett’s cells. These cells are pre-cancerous, though the risk of progression to oesophageal cancer is low. Men are much more commonly affected than women (4:1), with obesity and smoking other risk factors. New treatments available at London Digestion, such as the Barrx™ RFA system, allow the abnormal Barrett’s cells to be removed and replaced with normal cells, thus reducing the risk of progression to cancer (HALO RFA).

Gallstones

Gallstones can form in the gallbladder, or, in rare circumstances, in one of the bile ducts. Several small stones, a large quantity of stones or one large stone may form. They are more common as we age, and more so in women than in men. We provide effective treatment for gallstones, including laparoscopic (minimally-invasive or keyhole) surgery and medication.
